Breast Lift Surgery – Considerations

Women who have decided on breast lift surgery or mastopexy each have their own reasons for wanting to enhance their breasts. Mastopexy or breast lift surgery is a procedure to manipulate the breast tissues as well as the overlying skin to create a “perkier” breast mound and reposition the nipple/areola in a better position on the breast mound. Mastopexy procedures, which is usually cosmetic surgery, do not manipulate or sculpt the breast mound but simply reposition the nipple/areola on the existing breast mound.

Breast lift surgery can be performed by a variety of methods and there is no one method which is best suited for all patients. In most cosmetic surgery practices, the patient will make the decisions regarding mastopexy based upon their goals and expectations as well as their anatomy and willingness to take risks. Like everything in life, there are advantages and disadvantages for each option and every patient has different opinions and desires so you are encouraged to discuss the various options with your board certified plastic surgeon at length to find out which option is best for you. Your local plastic surgeon will review a few common options and some of the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Eyelid Surgery – Blepharoplasty

Men and women each have their own reasons for wanting to enhance their eyelids. An eyelid tuck, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of aging associated with the upper and lower eyelids. Signs of aging in the upper eyelids include loose sagging skin that creates fullness and disturbs the natural contour. Occasionally, this excess skin can be so severe that it impairs vision. In addition, puffiness in the upper eyelids could be due to excess fat deposits. Signs of aging in the lower eyelids include bags and dark circles, drooping of the lid margin, and excess skin. These effects of aging can create a tired or sad appearance.

Eyelid surgery is performed in a certified operating suite with either local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. The upper eyelid blepharoplasty utilizes incisions that can be concealed within the natural structures of the eyelid. The lower eyelid may be corrected with an incision below the lower lash line. In addition, a trans-conjunctival approach is an alternate technique that allows the incision to be hidden inside the lower eyelid. This technique allows redistribution or removal of excess fat; however it does not allow for removal of excess skin. It is important that you work with your plastic surgeon to choose the best option for you depending on the outcome you wish to achieve. The goals of surgery are to produce a more rested and refreshed appearance through repositioning or removal of excess fat and removal of excess skin.

Blepharoplasty procedures can be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as brow lifts to rejuvenate the aging forehead and brows and facelifts to rejuvenate the aging face.

Dental Implants and Orthodontics

If one or more of your teeth are missing or damaged, you may want to check out dental implants. Great advances have been made in implant technology, and the process of having one or more placed is now easier and less expensive. Unfortunately, the cost is not usually covered by insurance.

Dental implants can be used to permanently replace missing teeth. A titanium device that can anchor artificial teeth is surgically implanted into the jawbone. Dental implants can improve overall appearance, replace dentures and make chewing easier. The amount of dental work that needs to be done will determine how long the dental implant procedure will take and how many visits to the dentist will be required.

The Vertical Breast Reduction Surgery – Reduction Mammoplasty

The vertical breast reduction is the most common type of breast reduction performed in our practice and involves a scar around the areola and in a vertical direction beneath the areola down to the crease under the breast. This “lollipop” shaped scar allows exposure to the underlying breast gland to adequately shape and sculpt the breast mound. Additionally, closure of this vertical incision allows the breast “pillars” to be sutured together in the midline which creates additional projection and support to the breast mound independent of the overlying skin. The vertical breast reduction most commonly utilizes a superior or medial-based pedicle which means that the blood supply comes from the upper portion of the breast or from the portion closest to the sternum. The advantages to the vertical breast reduction include excellent breast shape, projection and long-term results. The disadvantages of the vertical breast reduction include significant breast projection (some people do not desire this) and the fact that the surgical result on the operating table does not look like the final result which will be seen in 3-4 months. Another potential disadvantage to the vertical mastopexy is the fact that skin is not removed in the horizontal plane and tightening of these tissues may take 4-6 months. The other advantage to the vertical mastopexy is that it avoids the transverse or “anchor” shaped scar.
